  • Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services’ CalFresh department can assist with the initial CalFresh application over the phone, no need for in-person appointments -  Flyer attached.

IRC is collecting healthy food recipes

Hi All, Harleen Bal at IRC is looking for student recipes to share with SIV (Special Immigrant Visa) holders and refugees. I'm attaching her email below and flyers to share with your students.  For more information her contact information is below in this email.

"We are working towards creating and distributing healthy recipes that individuals can try at home.  We are hoping to reach out to students, such as yours, who may be able to share some of their own personal healthy recipes.  We are particularly interested in collecting recipes that are nutritious, use shelf-stable/non-perishable items (beans/lentils), or ones that include a good amount of produce.   We’d like to potentially adapt one of these recipes or make them even more nutritious and send them out for families to try as a sort of “spotlight” recipe.  These recipes can be of any culture/tradition.  We’d like to continue promoting healthy nutrition and recipe sharing, given the situation and likelihood that people are cooking more than ever at home."

Behind the Scenes news for SJSD Tech Tip Tuesday

Live virtual class meetings are not required, but if teachers are doing live class meetings, Zoom is the recommended platform because, when configured correctly, it provides the most comprehensive security measures available.

On April 8, Zoom released an update that includes a new "Security" tool in the host toolbar. This tool provides easy access to several features that you can use to ensure that your Zoom meetings are not interrupted by inappropriate language or content from outsiders or even from the students.

When you receive the notification from Zoom that an update is available, be sure to install it in order to have access to this new feature.

For more information about the Security tool, and all of our recommended settings to protect your learning environment in Zoom, please consult the Recommended Settings document.

COVID-19 Chart about testing

Hi Everyone, 
I found this poster/chart the other day and I used Skitch to add the numbers for easier explaining and for students to follow along.  I think it's a nice pictograph of what to do in case of symptoms.  I am using this with my WhatsApp and Zoom classes to give them a sense of comfort that they have information about what to do in case. I've already been using it but would like to use it for more lessons as well. 

Would anyone like to work with me on making lesson plans to use this poster for the different ESL levels? We can do a Zoom meeting. Please let me know.

Two new drive-through food distributions

Subject: [Sacramento Refugee Forum] Two new drive-through food distributions
 
In response to the increased demand that COVID-19 has created for food access within Sacramento County, Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services is hosting two new drive-through distributions. In order to follow social distancing guidelines, these food distributions will be "touchless." Attendees will not leave their cars. Food will be placed directly in the trunks of vehicles. 

The two drive-through distributions will be at the following locations:

  • When: Tuesdays
  • Frequency: Weekly, until further notice
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (or until all food is gone)
  • Please do not line up before 1:45 p.m.
  • Distribution style: One-way drive-through distribution. Enter distribution via parking lot entrance closest to Greer Elementary (cars should approach heading West on Hurley Way and turning right on Bell Street).
  • When: Thursdays
  • Frequency: Weekly, until further notice
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (or until all food is gone)
  • Please do not line up before 1:45 p.m.
  • Distribution style: One-way drive-through distribution. Enter distribution via parking lot entrance closest to 20th Avenue (cars should approach heading North on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and should turn right into the school parking lot). 
Community members unable to attend may designate someone to pick up food on their behalf.
  • Community members unable to attend a distribution in person, can fill out an Alternative Pick Up Form that they will send with the individual picking up on their behalf.
  • Individuals picking up on behalf of another will be able to pick up for a maximum of two households, including themselves.
Attendees must meet the following income guidelines
The food distribution is open only to households that meet the following income guidelines. This will be a "self-certifying" food distribution, meaning that families will not need to show proof of income or provide I.D. to receive food assistance. Families simply need to verbally verify that they meet the income guidelines.

COVID-19 Relief from the Federal Government (Economic Impact Payment)

Who is eligible for the Economic Impact Payment?
U.S. citizens or resident aliens who:
 • Have a valid Social Security number,
• Could not be claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer, and
• Had adjusted gross income under certain limits.

Who will receive the Economic Impact Payment automatically without taking additional steps?
Most eligible U.S. taxpayers will automatically receive their Economic Impact Payments including:
• Individuals who filed a federal income tax for 2018 or 2019
• Individuals who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or Social Security Disability Insurance benefits

Who should use Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info link to provide additional information to the IRS so they can receive the Economic Impact Payment?

Eligible U.S. citizens or permanent residents who:
• Had gross income that was no more than $12,200 ($24,400 for married couples) for 2019
• Were not required to file a federal income tax return for 2019

You can provide the necessary information to the IRS easily and quickly for no fee at this website:   https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here

The IRS will use this information to determine your eligibility and payment amount so they can send you an Economic Impact Payment. After providing this information you won’t need to do anything else.
